IFFO RS collaborate with Department of Fisheries for Multi-Species development standard

Updated: Nov 19, 2020

Department of Fisheries, May 17th, 2018, TSFR lead by Mr.Pornsil Patchrintanakul, President of Thai Feed Mill Association alongside with Francisco Aldon, Chief Executive Officer and Nicola Clark, Impacts Manager from IFFO RS meeting with Dr.Adisorn Promthep, Director General Department of Fisheries.

The objective of the meeting is an introduction to initiate the collaboration between IFFO RS and Department of Fisheries for Multi-Species standard development. The development of the mixed trawl fisheries criteria (Multi-Species) is a great importance for the marine ingredient value chain. This will allow the standard to be more relevant for those types of fisheries that are common in Thailand, including many countries in South East Asian. This in turn will allow the Gulf of Thailand fisheries to demonstrate the commitment to improve by implementing effective fishery management systems that will protect fish stocks, the wider marine ecosystem and will reduce the utilization of IUU fish in the production of marine ingredients.

Once the standard is completed, it will allow the fishmeal factories using fish from the Gulf of Thailand, to apply to be accepted onto the IFFO RS Improvers Programme (IP) and this in turn will provide the opportunity for the resulting products to enter international markets and be recognised by the major aquaculture standards such as those from GAA Best Aquaculture Practice (BAP) and possibly the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC).
